Description

Catalogue Note

the 16th century icon restored and inset into a later panel, probably at some time during the 19th century, and with subsequent restoration and repainting; the oklad profusely decorated all over with a design of elaborate arabesques executed in blue, yellow, pink and white enamel, loosely based on 17th century style, the applied haloes similarly decorated, the background with a tesselated pattern of stylized cruciform flowerheads, the corners applied with stylized pinecones in pink and blue enamel

it is probable that the icon of the vladimir mother of god was inset, restored and subsequently contained within the oklad by a group of moscow old believers.

there is an oklad by this maker in the Historical Museum, Moscow (see M.M.Posnikova-Losseva, Zolotoe i Serebrianoe delo XV-XX vv., Moscow 1995, p.350.)
