Outlined in gilt on the officer's hat, on the table to the left of the young woman, is an anchor, indicating that the man is a naval officer. The fact that his uniform bears only one epaulet is a demarcation of rank. Handwritten notes on the modern seal indicate that this daguerreotype was once in the Stephen Anaya collection.
