Robert Lenkiewicz 1941-2002

The sitter was the subject of the artist's fourteenth project entitled The Painter with Mary. It represented four years work and, together with the notes and letters he kept, formed 'a very clear statement about obsessive behaviour' (ibid.p.100). It recorded not only his 'physiological' or 'aesthetic' addiction to Mary but also, his addiction to simply making a record of her actions from 'taking her coat off' to 'commenting on a photograph of me when I was nine...'(ibid.p.100). Mary later became the artist's wife.
