Les Ryder was known as Cider Ryder on account of his favourite drink. He was one of the vagrants Lenkiewicz became closest to and had 'an immense cachet of stories and memories he can barely articulate - you have to sit with him very patiently' (ibid.p.32). Lenkiewicz invited Les to be a guest of honour at the opening of his Retrospective in Plymouth in 1997 along with Terry Waite. He is the only member of the community of vagrants Lenkiewicz painted for Project 1 that is still alive today.
