Catalogue Note

On account of his premature death and his strong association with the pious Carthusian Order, Eustache Le Sueur (known as the 'French Raphael'), received a great deal of adulation in France during the 18th century. A sub-genre of painting, such as the present work, was established to celebrate his life. Another such example belonging to this sub-genre is a drawing by Ingres depicting Le Sueur réfugié chez les Chartraux in the Musée Ingres, Montauban.
