Cazes studied under René-Antoine Houasse and Bon de Boullogne. He came second in the Prix de Rome in 1698 and won the competition the following year. He remained in Paris and was received in the Academié Royale in 1703, becoming Chancellor at a later date. Cazes received many important secular and religious commissions, including for the King, notably a ceiling in the Tuilieries, the decoration of the Petits Cabinets of Louis XV and the Hôtel du Grand Maître at Versailles, and an altarpiece at the Church of the Park-aux-Cerfs also at Versailles.
