Catalogue Note
Lubbert Gerritsz. was a Mennonite theologian in Amsterdam and in Hoorn. The identification is confirmed by a comparison with Miereveldt's portrait of Gerritsz in Amsterdam University, also dating from 1607. An engraving by W.J. Delff, very close in composition to the present work, is in the Dresden print room (see F.W.H. Holstein, Dutch and Flemish Etchings, Engravings and Woodcuts ca. 1450-1700, vol. V, Amsterdam 1951, p. 178, no. 42, reproduced). The print dates from 1612, the year which Gerritsz. died at the age of seventy-seven.
