Catalogue Note

Though aware of view paintings by Venetian artists such as Marco Ricci and Luca Carlevarijs, the painter of this veduta would appear to have been of non-venetian origins. The dark ground and defined handling of both figures and architecture point to an artist working in the following of Giovanni Ghisolfi and a dating at the end of the 17th century seems likely. The fact that the view is not topographically accurate - not only is the Giudecca displaced but the artist has put only one instead of two columns in the Piazzetta - would indicate that the painter was probably using sources such as engravings for his design, rather than painting the scene from life.
