Catalogue Note

This is probably not a real view but a capriccio.  Hackert usually identified his depictions of actual sites with inscriptions, and capricci form a larger proportion of his late pictures, such as this one, than of his early works, when he had a smaller repertoire to draw upon.

Another picture by Hackert dated 1805, on a copper plate of identical size, is in the Germanisches Nationalmuseum in Nuremberg (inv. GM 1977; see C. Nordhoff & H. Reimer, Jakob Philipp Hackert 1737-1807. Verzeichnis seiner Werke,  Berlin 1994, p. 163, cat. no. 332; reproduced auction catalogue, Cologne, Lempertz, 10 December 1990, lot 710, plate 41).  They are Hackert's last dated works on metal but, although both are upright and treat comparable subjects, they are unlikely to be pendants.
