Hendrik Voogd Amsterdam bapt 1768 - 1839 Rome

Voogd first arrived in Rome in 1788, and remained there for virtually the remainder of his life. His landscapes were highly successful (and notoriously expensive) and  earned him the soubriquet of the 'Dutch Claude Lorrain' among the German Grand Tourists who comprised the majority of his patrons. The present painting probably dates from or after the second decade of the 19th century, by which time Voogd's interest in the effects of stormy light and his use of Italian cattle as motifs had become prevalent in both his paintings and drawings. The topography here is strongly reminiscent of Voogd's views of the valley of Ariccia painted in 1817, such as the one sold in these Rooms 14 December 2000, lot 236, and the one in the Museu civico, Bassano (for the latter see C.J. de Bruyn Kops, in Nederlands Kunsthistorisch Jaarboek, 21, 1970, p. 319, reproduced fig. 45), in which the features of the landscape are very similar to those depicted here.
