  • oil on canvas

Catalogue Note

The composition is very closely related to two other paintings by Guardi, both of which have an additional figure of a horseman lower left: one (44 by 53 cm.) is in the Musée de Picardie, Amiens; and the other (20.7 by 27.3 cm.) is in a New York private collection (both published by A. Morassi, Guardi. I dipinti, Venice 1993, vol. I, p. 495, cat. nos. 1000 and 1001, reproduced vol. II, figs. 884 and 886).  Given the fluid brushwork in all three works a dating in the 1770s for the present canvas seems likely.

The attriubtion to Guardi was endorsed by Antonio Morassi in a photostat expertise, dated March 1972, in which the painting is also dated to Guardi's mature period.
