Catalogue Note

Brueghel and Courtois collaborated on still-life compositions in Rome during the 1660s.  Comparable paintings by the two artists are in the Staatliche Museen, Dresden, and in the Museum of Fine Art at the Rhode Island School of Design, Providence, Rhode Island (see D. Graf & E. Schleier, "Guglielmo Cortese and Abraham Brueghel", in Pantheon, vol. XXXI, 1973, pp. 46-57).  Another collaborative painting by Brueghel and Cortese was sold at the Mauerbach Benefit sale, Vienna, Christie's, 29 October 1996, lot 130.

Sold in 1947 with a certificate by Ralph Warner (according to a label on the reverse).
