Catalogue Note
Only a few still lifes by the Liègois painter Léonard Defrance are known. One is in the Bonnefanten Museum in Maastricht; another, whereabouts unknown, is believed to be its pendant; a third was sold in New York in 1980, and several overdoors are in the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Liège. They reflect the artist's considerable French experience in Castres, Toulouse and Paris (he has been described as a friend of Fragonard), and are clearly influenced by Chardin. They probably all pre-date Defrance's journey to Holland in 1773, which seems to have brought about a profound change in his output which thereafter consists principally of genre scenes and depictions of industry.
