Catalogue Note
Ouwater painted a number of views of the Munttoren, or Mint Tower during the 1770s. The Tower, which takes its name from its use as a Mint between 1672-3 during the war with Louis XIV of France, was rebuilt following a fire in 1618, to a design by Hendrick de Keyser. Two further views of the Tower, both seen from the Kalverstraat rather than from the Singel canal, were painted by the artist in 1778 and 1779 (the former sold in these Rooms, 7 December 1994, lot 22; the latter offered in these Rooms, 17 December 1998, lot 50).
