Description
- Frans Snyders
- a still life of a peacock, a roe deer, a lobster on a wan-li porcelain plate, oysters on a silver platter, a spray of plum and fruit in a basket, all upon a table laid with a white and a blue cloth, with a cat on a window ledge, and parrots feeding
- oil on canvas
Catalogue Note
This is a slightly larger version of Snyders' signed painting formerly in the Werner collection in Schaffhausen (see H. Robels, Frans Snyders, Munich 1989, pp. 237-8, no. 84 I, reproduced p. 238). The only noticeable difference is that in the present picture the cat is shown in a window opening, while in the ex-Werner picture it sits on a ledge against the wall. The open window appears in a further version, in which the peacock and lobster are replaced with other objects.
