This painting was considered by Robinson (see Literature) to have been painted 'substantially' by Willem van de Velde the Younger, circa 1690. It was one of three marines, all of similar size, lent by the 3rd Earl of Mount Edgcumbe to the British Institution in 1828. A very comparable storm scene of very similar composition and date, formerly in the collection of Sir Joshua Reynolds, P.R.A., is now in the collections of the Earls of Warwick at Warwick Castle (op. cit., pp. 1064-66, no. 355). Like the present work, the Warwick Castle picture was probably originally signed on the reverse of the canvas, as was Van de Velde's common working practice towards the end of his life.
