Attributed to Andrea Solario Milan circa 1465 - 1524

Apparently hitherto unrecorded, this panel may be compared to Solario's famous and slightly larger depiction of the same subject now in the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Nantes (for which see D. Alan Brown, Andrea Solario, Milan 1987, pp. 228, 280, cat. no. 57, fig. 166). The composition of both paintings is very similar and differs chiefly in the different disposition of the hands. A related study in black chalk for the head of Christ is in the Albertina, Vienna (op. cit., reproduced p. 229, fig. 167).
