Catalogue Note
Michau's career spanned over sixty years. He entered the Brussels Guild in 1698, but by 1711 he is recorded in Antwerp, where he settled. Like many of his contemporaries, his subject matter is rooted in the tradition of Brueghel and David Teniers, but unlike them his soft pastel-like handling and colour scheme is thoroughly 18th century in character. This picture is a mature work, probably dating from around the mid-century.
