Catalogue Note

The relatively unknown Jacobus Vonck, pupil of Aart Schouman, was a decorative painter who occupied himself in Middelburg with the production of chimney pieces and overdoor paintings, as well as painting independent still lifes such as the present pair. Until now five of these still lifes have been identified, four of which, including this pair, were recorded in English private collections in 1972. These are all painted in 1760, are of roughly the same measurements and may have consigned as one group for a house.
