Although Ninane had earlier noted common characteristics between this picture and others given to the artist, Georges Marlier was the first to publish this is a work by Pieter Coecke van Aelst, noting that the face of Christ closely resembles that in Coecke van Aelst's Christ taking leave of his Mother in the Art Gallery, Glasgow.

This lot is sold with a photostat certificate by Max J. Friedländer, dated 1 November 1957, as by Pieter Coecke van Aelst.
