Gerard de la Vallée Antwerp(?) before 1605 - after 1667

Marijke C. de Kinkelder has kindly suggested the attribution to De la Vallée on the basis of photographs. The œuvre of this artist was assembled by H. Pauwels (see H. Pauwels, 'Gerard de la Vallée, een onbekend zeventiende-eeuws landschapsschilder', in: Bulletin Koninklijke Musea voor Schone Kunsten, vols. 34/37, 1985-88, pp. 203-208). 

Other examples of his work are a signed painting, depicting Christ on his way to Emmaus, sold New York, Christie's, 4 November 1986, lot 142, and a Landscape with Diana hunting in the Koninlijke Musea voor Schone Kunsten, Brussels (inv. no. 3173).

This lot is accompanied by a letter from B.J.A. Renckens of the R.K.D., The Hague, dated 28 December 1972, in which he attributes the present painting to David Vinckboons.
