Catalogue Note
The Amsterdam-born and trained Hendrik Voogd lived in Rome from 1788 until his death in 1839. The artist was particularly popular with German Grand Tourists among whom he was known as the 'Dutch Claude Lorrain'.
Until 1816 his views, mostly of the Roman campagna, had little stoffage. This changed thereafter. Another almost identical View of the valley of Ariccia, also signed and dated 1817, is in the Museo Civico, Bassano. The same hillside is also depicted in an oil sketch, formerly in the Knoeff collection, Amsterdam (see C.J. de Bruyn Kops, 'Hendrik Voogd, nederlands landschapschilder te Rome (1768-1839)', in: Nederlands Kunsthistorisch Jaarboek, vol. 21, 1970, p. 362, no. 6, reproduced fig. 45).
