Catalogue Note
A hitherto unknown work, this is one of the very few winter landscapes painted by Jacob van Strij. Although his landscapes usually show the stylistic influences of his 17th Century predecessors, like Aelbert Cuyp, his rare winter landscapes can be more linked to those by his fellow-18th Century painters like Hendrik Willem Schweickhardt and Andries Vermeulen (see E.J. Sluijter, 'In wedijver met de Gouden Eeuw: de gebroeders Van Strij en hun illustere voorgangers', in: exhibition catalogue, Dordrecht, Dordrechts Museum, Enschede, Rijksmuseum Twenthe, In Helder Licht: Abraham en Jacob van Strij, January-July 2000, pp. 117-119).
Two comparable landscapes by Van Strij are a signed Winter landscape with a horse pulling a sledge on a ramp, in the Gemeentemuseum, The Hague (inv. no. 40-1934), especially in its execution of the trees, and a signed Winter landscape on the frozen Devel river in the Dordrechts Museum, Dordrecht (inv. no. 223).
A copy of the present painting was sold, London, Phillips, 11 November 1988, lot 75.
