Catalogue Note
The attribution was confirmed, on the basis of a photograph, by William W. Robinson. Although no painting by van de Velde is known with exactly the same composition, the lying cow is a motif that recurs in a number of pictures dated between 1663 and 1670, in one case together with two sheep, very much as in this drawing (A Bay Horse, a Cow, a Goat and Three Sheep near a Building, 1663, London, National Gallery, inv.983). It would therefore seem reasonable to date the drawing to around the same period of van de Velde's career, circa 1663.
