Description
- Peeter Gijsels
- sheet of studies of peasants, horses and carts

Catalogue Note
Though they are clearly very close to the pictorial tradition of Jan Brueghel, the figures in this large, freely drawn study sheet show exactly the same rather personal interpretation of Breughel's figure types that is seen in the paintings of Gijsels. In particular, the knees, legs and heads of Gijsels' horses have a characteristic morphology. No other drawings by the artist are known, but the case for the attribution to him of this sheet seems compelling.
