Pauwels van Hillegaert Amsterdam 1596 - 1640

This drawing is clearly by the same distinctive hand as the group of landscape drawings which have been attributed by W. Schulz and K.G. Boon to Hillegaert, an artist who is, however, chiefly known for his painted battle scenes.  Two other drawings from this group are in Berlin (inv. 2775 & 2776, one reproduced in W. Schulz, Die hollandische Landschaftszeichnung, exhib. cat., Berlin 1974, fig. 24), and a further two were sold, one from the F.C. Butôt Collection, in these Rooms, 16 November 1993, lot 67, the other London, Sotheby's, 21 July 1966, lot 86.
