Catalogue Note

This drawing is a precise mirror-image of one in the Hamburg Kunsthalle (Kupferstichkabinett, inv. 22479; see Wolfgang Schulz, Herman Saftleven, Berlin/New York 1982, cat.1048, fig.189), which Dr. Schulz has kindly informed us may itself have been based on another, lost drawing by Saftleven. Given that there are rather flat traces of black chalk underlying the watercolour in the present drawing, it seems possible that the drawing we see here was in fact made over the base of a faint counterproof of the Hamburg sheet or the other, lost version.
