Catalogue Note

The technique of this drawing can be compared in particular with The Resurrection of Christ, in the Herzog Anton Ulrich-Museum, Braunschweig (inv. Z867).  In the engraving by Mattheus Greuter after the Braunschweig drawing, the inventor of the composition is given as Hendrick de Clerck, but Laureyssens and others have convincingly argued that the drawing is actually by Speckaert. The artist worked in Italy from the late 1560s until his death in Rome in 1577, and these drawings must date from fairly late in his career.
