Catalogue Note
This is a collection of popular tunes, arranged with bass accompaniments, by Peter Philips, a Roman Catholic composer educated at the English College in Douai. He was probably invited to prepare the edition by the jesuit Guillaume Marci. Les Rossignols is the only source for Palestrina's 'Hodie Maria virgo caelos ascendit', which Philips may have obtained directly from the composer in Rome.
