Description
signed, titled and dated Anvers 59 on the reverse oil on canvas
Catalogue Note
Verheyen´s painting is primarily based on the fact that the perception of light and colour is a physiological process, different from one individual to the other. Blue is not the same blue for everybody's perception, neither in blending nore in character. This seems very interesting, knowing that Verheyen suffered from a weakness of vision.
It is also of interest that Verheyen absolutely stood in the tradition of classical Flemish landscape-painting with its melancholy obscurity in winter as well as its clearness and brightness in summer. Verheyen lived his life partially in Belgium and in Southern France like Van Gogh.
Verheyens monochromes are in so far different from for example the monochromes of Yves Klein´s, as it more to close to emotions and nature, and less to theories, philosophy and mysticism.
