Catalogue Note

In the early 1880s, van Gogh became fascinated with the work of Millet whose concentration on peasants working in the field would leave a lasting impression on van Gogh. In 1880, van Gogh began to make drawings based on a series of drawings by Millet that had been reproduced as wood engravings in 1853 under the title Les Travaux des Champs, and the present work is the only surviving drawing from van this series. van Gogh returned to the subject in 1889 when he based a group of small paintings on these early drawings, including a painting of Moissonneur à la faucille, now in the van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam (Fig. 1).
