Catalogue Note
Cadell first visited the beautiful island of Iona in 1912 and over the following twenty-five years, he returned again and again to paint and sketch on the dunes and sandy shores. His views of Iona were immediately popular and attracted several new patrons, encouraging a period of high activity and of great success. Dressed in his bright waistcoat, tam o'shanter and kilt and residing in a humble crofter's cottage on the island, Cadell enjoyed the simplicity and remoteness of Iona. He loved the charming Medieval church and the undulating landcape enclosed by emrald and saphire waters in the summer when picnics and paintings could be created on the white beaches and friends were invited to share his enthusiasm for the tiny island.
