George W. Horlor active 1849-1891

George Horlor specialised in painting highland scenes depicting gun dogs, in what has been described as 'a bright, cheerful style' (Christopher Wood, Dictionary of Victorian Painters, pg.234). His best-known works are A Day's Sport, Perthshire of 1856 and Denizens of the Moors of 1866.

Setters in a Highland Landscape was owned by the Earl of Bradford and may depict three of his prize dogs. The Earl owned a large estate in Shropshire, Weston Park where partridge shooting was, and remains a regular feature of the social calendar and is now the site of the annual Midland Game Fair.
