Catalogue Note

The narrative of this painting is taken from Robert Burn's poem Tam O' Shanter, in which the drunken protagonist Tam, is beset by demons and witches after a night of drinking. Racing from his torments on his loyal mare Maggie, Tam escapes by crossing over a burn, as the devil's servants cannot cross running water.
