A set of two Dutch silver candlesticks, Jan Diederik Pont, Amsterdam, 1751 and 1760

each on a shaped circular base moulded with rococo shell ornaments rising to spirally baluster stems moulded with foliate scrolls, spirally fluted vase-shaped sconces and conforming detachable nozzles, one engraved with No 2 at the reverse of the base, both fully marked below the rim base, also struck with a 1795 control mark for Amsterdam

Thence by descent

An almost identical pair of candlesticks, and a pair of three-light candelabra, were sold in the W.J.R. Dreesmann sale by Frederik Muller in Amsterdam on 23rd March 1960, lot numbers 172, 173. One candlestick of lot number 172 is also engraved with No 2 and one candlestick of lot 173 as well, like one of the candlesticks on offer. It might be possible that all these candlesticks used to be in a set.
