Catalogue Note
The design of these candlesticks was used by Jan Diederik Pont in 1757 and in 1761. Silversmiths in Groningen, Utrecht, Rotterdam, and Gelderland used this design as well, see J.W. Frederiks, Dutch silver, Vol. III, The Hague, 1960, p. 54, no. 163, plate 129, for a pair of candlesticks by Salomon Lamberts from Zutphen in 1766, and Sotheby's Amsterdam, 13 November 2000, lot 260 for a pair of candlesticks by Gerard van de Bijlaard from Utrecht in 1763. Another pair of candlesticks, by the Rotterdam silversmith Bartholomeus van der Tooren in 1766, is in a private collection in England.
