Catalogue Note

When studying at the Glasgow School of Art, James Herbert MacNair and Charles Rennie Mackintosh were introduced to the two Macdonald sisters. There was a distinct similarity in their work they soon became known as 'The Glasgow Four'. In 1899 MacNair married Frances, and in 1900 Mackintosh married Margaret. The above lot dates from before his marriage when he left Glasgow for Liverpool, and is a rare survivor as MacNair destroyed much of his work late in life.
