Catalogue Note
A pupil of Giovanni Dupré, Nicoli was born in Carrara and studied in Florence. Between 1876 and 1879 he executed the statue to Cervantes erected in Alcalá de Henares, Spain. He was responsible for a number of monuments around the world, such as Queen Elizabeth (Melbourne) and the Expulsion of the Portuguese (Bahia, Brazil). His workshop survives to the day in Carrara as the Studio di Scultura Nicoli and has a UNESCO recognition
