Catalogue Note

This impressive marble is not specifically recorded in the 1987 catalogue of Larche's work, but this is probably to be explained by the fact that it may have formed part of a larger decorative ensemble such as his various projects for fountains.  These include his 1897 Fontaine Amédée Larrieu at Bordeux and his 1903 Fontaine Sube at Reims.  The flamboyant style of this figure is, however, typical of Larche. Another version is in the Musée Municipal in Évreux, bequeathed by Modeste Leroy in 1935 (inv.no.11230). A reference to a version exhibited at the Galerie Robiony in Nice in September 1974 (cat.no.119) may be identified with the present work.
