Alessandro Rossi Italian, 1819-1891

Alessandro Rossi was born in Lugano, Switzerland but his life was primarily spent in Milan where he rose to become a professor of the Accademia di Brera. He initially studied there under Pompeo Marchesi and participated in various exhibitions displaying figurative works such as La Vendemmia in Milan in 1881 and his L'autunno for the Esposizione di Torino in 1884. The Galleria d'arte moderna in Milan conserves his bust of Lucia Mondella.
Rossi was a prominent exponent of Lombard and in particular Milanese sculpture, helping to set up an association to promote and display up to 200 works from the region in a permanent exhibition started in 1869. Through his energies this eventually metamorphosed into the 'L'Esposizione Permanente d'Arte Italiana Moderna' founded in Paris in 1879.
