John Singer Sargent American, 1856-1925

The present work is a cast of a model for a monumental sculpture that was never completed. Two other casts are known: one is in the collection of the Hirshhorn Museum, Washington, D.C. Provenance: Mr. Harold Weinstein (sold Sotheby Parke Bernet, 25 October 1979, lot 109, illustrated), while the other was exhibited in Elkhart, Indiana, Midwest Museum of American Art, 1980-2001, and recently sold by Sotheby's New York, 5 March 2003, lot 60 for $42,000.
