Description
- A stone corbel
in the form of a sphinx, the female head with hair dressed with laurel wreath, wings at the sides
Catalogue Note
The calciferous stone used, with the external appearance of honestone, has enabled the sculptor to carve intricate details in the treatment of the hair and wings of this unusual corbel. It has been suggested that the stone originates from the Pyrenees in South Western France.
