Ferdinando Vichi Italian, 19th/20th Century

Vichi was one of the talented band of Tuscan sculptors associated with the Bazzanti gallery in Florence. His work in marble and alabaster shows a high technical ability, perfectly shown in his large marble Gypsy Dancing Girl, sold in these rooms as lot 72, 12 May 1995, or his Romeo and Juliet, sold in these rooms as lot 116, 28 April 1989. His figure compositions are varied in subject matter ranging from busts after the Antique to orientalist themes and Renaissance-inspired models. The present female personification is one of the more decorative sculptural allegories of Italy which were ever popular in the post-Risorgimento era. Another marble version of this subject was sold as lot 57, Sotheby's, New York 24 April 2003 for $54,000.
