Catalogue Note

Good specialised in hunting and racing themes and was the foremost English animalier sculptor of the third quarter of the nineteenth century. His modelling is always crisp and the present casts by Elkington are highly finished, with fine detail. Both Calling Hounds Out of Cover and The View Halloo date to 1874, when Good exhibited them at the Royal Academy (nos.1597-8 respectively). They were probably intended as pendants as they often appear on the market together, as in the present case. Good's brief career - he started exhibiting at the Royal Academy in only 1870 - was cut short by his early death in 1879, aged 34. His studio was located off the Fulham Road.
