Catalogue Note

Executed circa 1882

The present lot was executed during (or shortly after) Achenbach´s trip to Italy in 1882. It can be compared to a drawing of the Lateran with the Porta S. Giovanni in the artist´s sketchbook (Kunstmuseum Düsseldorf, inv.no. 24-333). A similar painting with a different staffage is illustrated in the second volume of Kunst für Alle, 1898. The present lot was probably also exhibited at the Berliner Jubiläumsaustellung in 1886.
