Manner of Adriaen Isenbrant the madonna and child enthroned accompanied by angels

The composition is largely based on the central panel of a winged altarpiece by Isenbrant, of which the present location is unknown (see M.J. Friedländer, Early Netherlandish Painting, vol. XI, 1974, p. 81, no. 134, illustrated plate 112). According to Friedländer, Isenbrant copied the composition from an altarpiece by Jan Gossaert in the Galleria Nazionale, Palermo (see Friedländer, vol. VIII, 1972, p. 90, no. 2, reproduced plate 5). Only one other copy after Isenbrant's version is recorded, formerly in the De Rothschild collection, and with unknown measurements (see Friedländer, vol. XI, op. cit. p. 82 under 134a).
