A rare South German ebonised night timepiece, circa 1675

7½ x 10½-inch oil on copper dial depicting the martyred St Sebastian tended by Cupid, the upper section pierced with quarter hour numerals above a sector revealing the hour roundels divided by flying putti revolving against the quarter hour marks, an arcaded pendulum aperture along the lower edge, circular gilt-brass movement with turned pillars, fusee and chain, verge escapement with silk suspension and pierced and engraved set-up ratchet, driving the 7½- inch brass hour disc fitted with three 3-inch subsidiary discs pierced with the hour numerals, rectangular moulded case with giltwood border to the door, the interior with a shelf for the light, lined with metal on the upper side, removable top to expose a chimney aperture; restoration to case .
