Catalogue Note

"In a context made dynamic by the anonymous laceration, a mouth opens into a smile, an appearing face, an emerging body, each acquires an unexpected significance, they all become stimuli to a vision, with an almost violent expressive power.

Compared to their original state, these images/forces, generated by the Roman walls, are endowed with an excessive presence that disenchants their myth. They have therefore become more real than the myth they pretended to embody, more real than the reality that they were supposed to represent." Pierre Restany in Exhibition Catalogue, Venice, XXXII Biennale Internazionale dell’Arte di Venezia, 1964, pp. 108 & 109
