Catalogue Note

Painted circa 1885-6. Count Karl Ferdinand Franz von Kuefstein and his wife Maria Magda were among Romako's most important and loyal patrons. Maria Magda (1845-1897), née Krüger, married the Count in Paris in 1870. Together, they continued the long family tradition of fostering close contacts with artists and musicians, who included over the course of the century Goethe, Gounod, Liszt, Schumann, Mendelssohn, Johann Strauss, and Heinrich Heine.
