Catalogue Note

This panoramic view down the Bosphorus towards the Golden Horn takes in some of Constantinople's most celebrated nineteenth-century monuments. In the foreground on the right, overlooking the water, is the Dolmabahçe Palace, built in 1856 by Sultan Abdül Mecit to replace the old Sultan's palace at Topkapi. Beside it to the left towers the Dolmabahçe Mosque, completed at the same time as the palace. Further along the shore is the Nusretiye Mosque, built in the 1820s. In the distance, behind the tall ship, can be glimpsed the minarets of the Blue Mosque on the far side of the Golden Horn.
